AUSTIN POOLS SAFETY

The issue of swimming pool safety is often of utmost importance in the mind of every prospective swimming pool owner, especially if you have small children and pets.  Of course, supervision is always essential in any situation where there is a large body of water but along with that Austin Pools Safety with the Association of Pool and Spa Professional (APSP) advocates a  safety system called Layers of Protection.  The following are several key points of this system which will help protect your pool  and prevent the possibility of accidents:

• Emergency Information - Make sure all necessary emergency telephone numbers, CPR information and warning signs are clearly visible and accessible.  Along this same line, make sure a telephone is always available in case of an emergency.

• Emergency Equipment - Keep a life ring and/or float close to the water so they are easily accessible in case of emergencies.

• Use of alarms will let you know when an area has been accessed. There are several different types of alarms available from the type which attach to your doors and fences and even those that clip onto children.  

• Safety covers prevent access to hot tubs, spas and pools when they are not supervised.  Ensure they are not penetrable and completely secure and cover the water environment.

• Fencing is also an excellent choice to enclose and secure the hot tub, spa or swimming pool.  Ensure the fence is a minimum of 4' high.

• A float line when place between the shallow and deep ends will alert swimmers to the change in depth.
